Mixing spirits and liqueurs with other ingredients to create a tasty drink has probably been around since the dawn of time.

However, as with most products in the beverage industry, there is debate about when the term "cocktail" was first used and where it originated.

Most agree with the April 28, 1803 article in the Vermont Farmer's Cabinet, where drinking a cocktail was considered "excellent for the head."

However, the word was used with its current meaning in 1806. In the May 13th edition of the Balance and Columbian Repository, the editor defined a cocktail as "a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters".
