Ever wonder where that icing-filled treat you love so much came from? Someone just realized that it would be a great idea to create a portable cake, taking sweet desserts to a whole new level.

Although cakes have been around for centuries, cupcakes first appeared in the 19th century, thanks to the United States of America.

The idea behind making cupcakes was developed in "American Cookery", a 1796 cookbook by Amelia Simmons. However, the word "cupcake" itself did not appear until 1828, when the famous author and cooking expert Eliza Leslie published her cookbook "Receipts", which included the recipe for the first cupcake.

Although Leslie can be credited with cementing the first cupcake recipe, there is no single inventor of this treat. For the most part, "cupcake" was simply a name for a measurement.
