The history of ice cream began in Italy. To mention just one: it was the eclectic genius architect Bernardo Buontalenti of Florence who created the first modern ice cream. In 1500, Buontalenti designed buildings, theaters, gardens and the first refrigerated rooms in wood and cork. He was also a good mathematician, but his most interesting invention was probably the modern ice. It was made with ice, salt (to lower the temperature), lemon, sugar, eggs, honey, milk and a drop of wine. This creation was to signify the Renaissance court of Grand Duke Cosimo de' Medici. It was Caterina De' Medici who made the gelato famous. Shortly after this first appearance of gelato, it was she who offered this amazing dessert to the French Court as an ultimate gift of the Italian Renaissance.
